On method
The Hepatic Index weighs seven standard markers against typical adult reference ranges — transaminases heaviest (ALT 24, AST 22), then GGT 16, bilirubin and albumin 12 apiece, ALP 8, platelets 6 — and rescales over whichever markers an entry includes. Values inside range score 100; elevations decay along a fixed curve (twice the upper limit ≈ 60, four times ≈ 12). When age, AST, ALT and platelets are all known, the FIB-4 fibrosis screen may subtract up to 14 points.
It is a heuristic for watching direction over time, not a diagnosis. Two markers can be normal in serious disease; one can be high in perfect health. The number is a companion to medical care, never a replacement for it.
